Sandplover in the States

G'day Nathan,

While I agree this bird is probably a Greater Sandplover I wouldn't describe
its bill as very stout and long by Greater Sandplover standards.
The first American record for this species was from California and it was a
bird that wouldn't look out of place in Australia showing the big heavy bill
typical of ssp leschenaultia, that bird had simply gone down the wrong shore
of the Pacific.
If this record from Virginia is a Greater Sandplover then I suspect this
bird's less substantial bill dimensions would probably be a better fit with
ssp columbinus from Turkey and the Middle East than the ssp leschenaultia,
in which case it has crossed the Atlantic!!.
Interested to hear other opinions on this bird.

Cheers Jeff.

Hi,

I would think it is Greater Sandplover as the bill is very stout and long.
Lessers have much slighter bills in my experience.
