For those of you who missed the story about the Repco Car Rally on the 7.30
Report last night you can view it at www.abc.net.au/7.30/ under the heading
"Northern Rivers At Odds With Rally Race".
The story glossed over the detail of the environmental issues (which is
disappointing), but did highlight the absurdity of holding the rally in a
biodiversity hotspot. What interested me was how the NSW Development
Minister (Ian MacDonald) openly admitted on camera that special legislation
had to be passed in Parliament, sidelining the usual state environmental and
planning laws, to prevent members of the public stopping the event.
I would also be interested to see the rally organizers temporarily halt race
stages if they see a Koala cross the road or tracks in front of rally cars,
as the CEO of Rally Australia claimed would happen. They also seem to be
concerned about protecting Koalas only, and there was no mention if they
would take the same course of action if other wildlife species (e.g.
Albert's Lyrebirds, Black-breasted Button-quails, Long-nosed Potoroos,
Three-toed Snake-toothed Skinks) crossed roads.
