Hi Chris,

As Carl Clifford said, if you're in Sandakan around the 10-14 October, try
to get to the Sandakan Bird Festival.

At Sandakan/Sepilok there is the Rainforest Discovery Centre (a couple of
minutes walk from the Orang-utan rehabilitation centre) - this is one of the
best spots for Bornean Bristlehead.

If you get the chance to get to the Kinabatangan River you won't be
disappointed. Alan McBride recommended Robert Chong, and I can certainly
endorse that recommendation. Robert can be contacted on: +60 198047756
(mobile) - be aware that since he spends the majority of his time in the
jungle, you may have to leave a message and wait a few days. Alternatively,
contact him through his wife, Annie, at the Forest Edge Resort in Sepilok -
+60 89533190 (office) or +60 198435017 (mobile). If you haven't already got
your accommodation sorted in Sandakan, consider staying at Annie's place in
Sepilok.

Another good guide is Azahari Reyes (known to most as Jason) - he can be
contacted on +60 168285098 (mobile) or - he lives in Kota
Kinabalu so could be helpful at Mount Kinabalu. Jason may be in Sandakan for
the Bird Festival.

Susan Myers is perhaps the best known Australian guide for Borneo (and much
of SE Asia). She can be contacted at - I believe
that she'll be in Sandakan for the Bird Festival.

Anyway, good luck in Borneo!

Hi all,

I'm visiting Borneo in October, and will have 2 small windows to do my own
thing while I'm there. I will have an overnight stay in Sandakan and was
thinking an overnight trip on the Kinabatang River, and 2 nights in the Kota
Kinabalu area to spend at Kinabalu Park. I would love to hear
recommendations from people of tours/tour guides they have used in these
areas to help me make up my mind. I'm looking for someone who knows their
birds but can also talk about the other animals and plants.

Regards,
Chris
