Hi there birders,
Is it magpie swooping season again?
I'd better get ready - but not for the swooping birds on our 5 acre
property. The resident magpies here nest every year within 50 metres of
our house. In 25 years we have never been swooped, something for which
we are grateful.
On the other hand - I need to get ready for the flood of questions and
comments and vitriol posted in comments on my birding blog. I've been
writing about Australian birds, including magpies, for nearly 5 years.
In that time I've had nearly half a million visitors to my blog. Of the
thousands of comments that readers have left, the most common are as
follows:
1. Complaints about Magpies swooping.
2. Complaints about Masked Lapwings swooping.
3. Queries about how to care for baby orphaned birds, usually Blackbirds.
Many of the comments are redneck responses - 'shoot 'em all' is a common
thread. A few enlightened people are trying to learn to live with the
inconvenience.
I try to educate readers on how to live with the birds that inhabit our
land. It's a long, slow, frustrating process.
But I try.
Good birding.
