Pat - Shimba's guide is very good, I used it last year while in Tokyo (ordered
through AndrewIsles). Temple gardens are pretty good for birds if you are
pressed for time. Shinobazu (Ueno) Pond in the middle of Tokyo is very good for
birding if you are going to Kyoto through Tokyo.

Hi Pat
There is an English Field Guide published in 2007 - A Photographic Guide to
the Birds of Japan and North-east Asia
by Tadao Shimba
We ordered it from the UK publisher as we were going to Japan in 2007.
Unfortunately it arrived 2 days before got home!! Not sure if it is
available in OZ.

Hi all
Off to Kyoto next week and should have a day to two to spare for birding. As
I recall Japanese field guides are non-existent in English. Can anyone
advise - also, any birding spots in the vicinity.
Best
Pat
