Hi folks,
I can now confirm that a breeding plumaged Chinese Pond Heron was seen on a
survey vessel off the WA coast near Scott Reef (well within Australia's EEZ) on
the 4th of March 2009
Jack received a request from friends of the people on the boat who, in turn,
emailed a photo of an unidentified bird to Jack. Jack immediately identified it
because we saw a similar bird on Christmas Island 7 times in 2008 about the
same time of the year.We also saw the 2 Javan Pond Herons on West Island, Cocos
Islands at the same time as this pond heron was seen. We have just now received
further photos and are following up other detail. We do know that it landed mid
morning on the vessel and was very timid according to the crew members. It
flew away and re-landed on the boat a few times and was present for a couple of
hours.
The non-birding crew members appear happy for Jack to submit a BARC report. It
should be a bit easier than his Uniform Swiflet one recently!
Cheers,
Bill
