Hi all,
While rainfall closer to Adelaide has been excellent this month it looks
like Birds Australia's Gluepot reserve has missed out on most of the action.
However the occasional sprinkling appears to have been sufficient to have
spurred most birds into action again. At my recent visit to the reserve and
its surrounding mallee the tally included two active malleefowl mounds, two
flocks of Black-eared Miners (one unfortunately mostly of hybrids) and two
new pairs of Red-lored Whistler. Also of interest was stumbling upon an emu
nest with 7 eggs. All the other regular species (including Chestnut
Quail-thrush, Shy Heathwren, Southern Scrubrobin, White-browed Treecreeper)
were active but Striated Grasswren numbers are at record lows, with a search
of four territories that have been active for many years only resulting in
one glimpse.
Around the Murray river Regent Parrots are looking at nest hollows, both
Pallid and Horsfield's Bronze-cuckoos sing each morning, and some of the
wetlands have received a much-needed water allocation resulting in frantic
water bird activity, including one Freckled Duck (no doubt there's more).
For more info on this region visit my website (below).
Regards,
Peter Waanders
