Hi Jen, you've probably seen these reports (see below) - and also I saw
one at Reedy Lake several months ago.
Cheers,

5/07/2009 Australasian Bittern Western Treatment Plant. Magnificent
adult Bittern has reappeared in the drain on the south side of the 35/55
East Conservation Ponds where it has been seen in winter in the last few
years. I expect it was engaging in its usual practice of hunting
Growling Grass Frogs. Observer: John Barkla, Fred Smith, Alison Street
and Wendy McWilliams Further
20/06/2009 Australasian Bittern, Brown Quail, Banded Lapwing Reedy
Lake, Bellarine Peninsula. Whilst participating on the winter wader
count, a single Australasian bittern was flushed and a brown quail and
banded lapwing encountered. John Newman, Ton Schat, Mike Honeyman 21/6

07/06/2009 Australasian Bittern, Australasian Darter Altona.
Highlights of a quick tour around the traps were an Australasian Bittern
seen well in flight and on deck in SW corner of Cherry Lake, along with
a fine male Darter. A brief look at mouth of Laverton Ck on highish tide
(1500 hrs) produced 71 Pacific Gulls, with the only waders present being
c.10 Pied Oystercatchers and zero Hudwits.
