Hi Tom and Birding Aus watchers,
This sighting of an Australasian Bittern is quite interesting. Birds
Australia is still looking for Australian Bittern sightings and this one is
outside the area that reports have been coming in from. It seems that there
have been no records from this far north for over a year.
Australasian Bitterns appear to be declining and all information is
important. Historically (ie 50+ years ago) AB were found on the Brisbane
River but more recently the northern limit seems to have withdrawn into
NSW.
Are there any more recent records from QLD or northern NSW? Does anyone have
any comments on them being seen seasonally in this area?
Maybe the extreme dry down south is forcing the birds north to better
habitat? Please keep reporting all Australasian Bittern sightings to Birds
Australia or on this forum.
Thanks
Jenny
