Hi all
My first visit to Kurrajong in a few weeks on the weekend 11-12 July.
Nothing unusual but certainly the best numbers of many typical wintering
species in several years present at the moment. A group of 14 Satin
Bowerbirds - all female-plumaged - in the garden is the largest local
number I've recorded in 10 years of records, and this species whilst
usually common here in winter is very conspicuous this winter. Crimson
Rosellas are also in their best numbers in several years. An impressive
winter feeding flock of estimated 270+ birds on Mill Rd was about 80%
Silvereyes (those seen clearly all Tassie ssp) with most of the others
White-naped HE and a few Yellow-faced. Bell Miner breeding in the garden
continues throughout winter as usual, with some ridiculously exposed
nest sites this year - the latest with 2 eggs is in a sparse callistemon
just over a metre off the ground - perhaps its not an issue when they
are so successful at driving out their various enemy species.
