Hi Folks,
Was down at Mistral Point with Ray Gobbe principally looking for whales on a
relatively calm morning. Saw about 15 Humpbacks as well as Australian
Fur-Seal. A real surprise for us was an immature Grey-Headed, seen twice for
a number of minutes. It was quite distinctive from the many hundreds of
immature Black-Browed we've seen over the years. Features noted - medium
grey head and neck (with a lighter grey cheek area and dark eyebrow) with a
sharp cut-off to the white breast; bill was a uniform dark grey; feet were
distinctly pink; upperwing dark grey (as opposed to black); underwing -
unusual - a uniformly dark underwing with one long thin rectangular light
gray/smutty white 'window' (underwing secondary coverts), running from the
dark grey axillaries to the bend of the wing, noteable was how thick the
dark grey band was along the forward edge of the underwing.
Cheers, Graham Buchan
