Dear all,
I think all birders should support this campaign urgently. The
proponents of the project say that the mining is not open cut mining,
but as the web site of Australian Auger Mining P/L says " Auger
Mining is a highwall mining system that is applied in open-pit mines
where mining coal is uneconomical due to the high strip ratio arising
from increasing mining depths or difficult geologically conditions"
See http://www.auger.com.au/augermining.htm To access the coal seams
at this location, significant excavation will be needed for "access
pits" which will be approx. 100 to 200 m in width and up to 2.5
Kilometres long. See http://www.centennialcoal.com.au/ssl/axs/1/assets/page/757/assets/Olstan
Newsletter 01.pdf , hardly an insignificant excavation, and a
disaster for a number of endangered species.
Unfortunately this type of mining is classified as underground mining
under NSWs's Environmental Planning and Assessment Act and the usual
environmental protections applying to open cut mining do not come into
play.
The life span of the project is only 3 years. An awful lot of habitat
destruction for a short term gain.

Greetings
I am involved in the campaign to stop a proposed open cut auger mine
going
ahead in west Lake Macquarie. The Olstan project is proposed near the
villages of Blackalls Park, Awaba, Fassifern and the town of Toronto.
I am
looking for assistance in this battle. The habitat of the masked owl,
the
powerful owl, the sooty owl, just to name a few, are at risk.
Air pollution including PM2.5 particles is an issue, affecting the
health of
residents.
If you can assist in any way please contact.
