On rechecking my photos, I found one showing that bird to have a black tail.

Hi Peter,
It was just before 11:30 on Monday the 8th of June, Queens birthday.
I'd been looking for a little while and then saw them on the other side
of some water on the edge of a large sand bar. This was all on the
south side of the entrance of the Laverton river. I sat for about half
an hour getting a wet bum hoping that I'd see the tell tail under wing
pattern and I'd given up, I got up to leave and thought I'd grab a
couple more shots and then it just stretched. A nice surprise.
