That is pretty much my opinion on the use of playback by birders who
are just after a tick. If you can't get a tick by unaided birding
trade-craft, well it is just tough luck, better luck next time. The
use of play-back is as bad as using birdlime.

I think I told you before that territorial response in some species,
even natural response can be sufficient to cause nesting to fail. This
has been seen in Boobooks by Olsen and Trost.
The long and the short of it is that 'Twitcher' is not going to
stick around after getting his TICK to see what the effect was. Unless
he is going to stick around and conduct some psychopathology on him.
What does he achieve with playback.
If he is twitching, probably just a TICK.
If he is surveying for a reason he may get useful distribution
information.
If he is studying behaviour or ecology he will probably have just
screwed up a period of his study.
With playback he may have just screwed up someone else's study.
He may have just disrupted a critical phase of breeding.
He may have just damaged someone else's chance of getting a TICK."
