Following Peter Shutes tip-off yesterday, I headed to Laverton Creek mouth
to try for the Hudsonian Godwit.
I arrived at Doug Grant Researve by the creek mouth at around 11:35 and
quickly located 3 godwits feeding along the edge of the wetland side. I got
my scope on them and 2x Bar-tailed with one in red breeding colour, and the
Hudsonian. I.D of the Hudwit was helped when it took a dislike to a nearby
stilt, chasing it and flapping its wings revealing black "armpits". Then all
3 godwits flew a short distance over to the sandspit across the creek mouth
and I was able to compare the underwing patterns.At about 12:00 or so
everything was put to flight by a Swamp Harrier and I lost sight of the
godwits as they flew into Cheetham wetlands. About 10 or 15 minutes later
one non-breeding Bar-tailed returned to the sand-spit and took up roosting
on one leg with its head tucked under its wing. I left the area at around
14:15 having had no further sighting of the other two godwits.
