On Friday afternoon 5th June an immature Pomarine Jaeger flew over
the fishing boat that we had chartered, about one kilometre NE of
Snapper Island which lies immediately off the coast at the Daintree
River. I was fishing in the company of Dave and Tracey, guide and
managers of the Mareeba Wetlands. The Jaeger was first noticed by Tracy
flying above the boat and we had the luxury of the bird settling on the
water about sixty metres away. It was a light phase individual and the
first I had observed in tropical waters. It matched well the
illustration in my Pizzey and Knight field guide.
My only other observations of the species were on sea bird charters
off Wollongong in the mid nineteen seventies. According to my available
literature it appears to be a late record.
