So we went for wander down the back of the art museum at the
University of Qld this morning. They are doing up (repaving) the car
park where the Bush Stone Curlews are usually found. Big disruption to
their usual hang out and we only saw one solitary BSC sitting
forlornly on the ground in the thin strip of bushes they've left
running along the fringe of the development area along the fenced off
path. Does anyone have any information about recent sightings of these
birds in the university precinct? This area is usually reliable for
them but of course with all the development activity I hope they've
not been frightened off for good.
Pointedly there was a sign posted to the wire fencing they've erected
around the development warning people to be careful of the curlews and
their breeding from September to December. Judging by the state of the
disturbance they won't be breeding this year. Also does anyone know
how one would point out to the university that the inevitable
landscape gardening that will follow after the parking area is
completed ought to be friendly to the BSCs?
thanks
