All,
I found 12 Regent Honeyeaters at Werekata N.P. at Pelton near Cessnock, Hunter
Valley, NSW.
This is the same site Mick Roderick has recently seen Swift Parrots. I got
there early in the morning to see if the Swifts were around, but dipped only to
find 3 Regents. I went back there in the arvo and found 12 Regents. They were
in ones and twos, with one sighting of 3 birds in one tree. Some were feeding
on Spotted Gum blossom (of which there is plenty) and others lerping on
Broad-leaved Ironbark, some were busy chasing each other. Not all were feeding
though, but all were vocal making it easier to track down. They were seen here
at the exact same location in 2005, which also is when the spottys last
flowered abundantly and when we had large numbers of Swift Parrots. Some Swifts
were heard on dusk but were unable to be located. Will be monitoring this area
closely, as well as other local hotspots for these species.
Steve Roderick.
