Hi all,
This afternoon, at the very end of the RH / SP survey weekend I saw up to 16
Swift Parrots (seen as groups of 6, 8, then 2 individials seen at different
times) in the Pelton section of Werakata NP, about 10km south-west of Cessnock,
NSW. Some birds could be heard calling from a roost tree just before dusk,
though I couldn't locate the tree. This site is a know spot for them, and over
100 birds have been seen here in recent years.
There is a bountiful amount of blossom around at the moment in the Spotted Gum
/ Ironbark Forests near Cessnock, so these birds would have good reason to stay
and to perhaps build in numbers.
Also of note, I saw around 300 Little Lorikeets spread out over about a dozen
locations - the most numerous being at the Pelton site and nearby Ellalong
(about 100 birds at both sites). There were slightly smaller numbers of Musk
Lorikeets too (close to 100 birds at Paxton). Plenty of White-naped HE, as well
as Black-chinned and Brown-headed and of course, no shortage of Noisy Friars.
Many of the flowering Spotted Gum trees have still a lot of bud left, so it'll
be interesting to see what happens over the next month or so.
Cheers,
Mick
