Hi everyone,

Jaime and I returned yesterday from a night and a morning in the Capertee
Valley. We arrived at the township of Capertee on Monday just before sunset
where a Jacky Winter and a group of Yellow-rumped Thornbills were feeding in
the park. We then drove about 10km along the Glen Davis Rd where we
found the usual campsite at the entrance to Gardens of Stone National Park.
After setting up the tent and eating dinner, we heard a POWERFUL OWL calling
in the distance, and soon after a SOOTY OWL (Rare in the valley?) came down
from the nearby hill to investigate us at camp. The owling seemed good, so
we drove into Glen Alice in an attempt to pick up a Barking Owl. It took
around 15mins of listening, but at 9:00pm a BARKING OWL called a few times
across the road from the cemetery. After returning to camp very satisfied we
went to bed, when the 4th owl of the night was heard, a Southern Boobook.

We awoke the next morning to a Mistletoebird, Varied Sittellas, Little
Lorikeets and a GLOSSY BLACK-COCKATOO. After breakfast we stopped at the
Coco Creek bridge where we saw Dusky Woodswallows, Red-browed and
Double-barred Finches, White-plumed Honeyeaters and 2 Crested Shrike-tits.
At the start of Crown Station Rd there was a CHESTNUT-RUMPED HEATHWREN
calling in the shrubs, as well as White-browed Babblers, Diamond Firetails,
Double-barred Finches, Red-rumped Parrots, White-plumed Honeyeaters, Little
Lorikeets and an Eastern Yellow Robin.

Continuing down Crown Station Rd, we stopped at the gate of 215 where the
first bird we saw in a small flowering gum with some mistletoe was a REGENT
HONEYEATER. This was the only Regent we could find, although the trees were
alive with honeyeaters, comprising mainly of White-plumed and Red
Wattlebirds. After picking up a few more species such as Little Eagle,
Australian King-Parrot and Restless Flycatcher we headed towards Glen Davis.

At the Capertee River bridge, there were many Zebra Finches, a WHITE-BELLIED
CUCKOO-SHRIKE, Southern Whiteface, Brown Falcon
Richard's Pipit and 2 Black-fronted Dotterels. Ending the morning at the
Glen Alice campground we found Peaceful Dove, Striped Honeyeater and Brown
Treecreepers.

A spectacular morning in the Capertee.

Cheers,

Nigel Jackett
