hi all
last thursday and again on saturday i paddled my kayak out the brisbane river
mouth and north around luggage and juno points.
this is a large tract of relatively untouched and fairly inaccessible mangroves
and swampland between the sewage treatment works and the airport. i've been
wanting to explore it for a while now.
i had great views of a pair of white-bellied sea eagles both days and saw six
species of raptor in all on sat: osprey, brahminy kite, wedge-tailed eagle,
whistling kite and kestrel. some nest there evidently.
the most unusual sighting was white-breasted woodswallows hawking off a
navigational marker out in the river mouth on thurs.
other birds seen included: reef egret, striated heron, mangrove gerygone
(heard), mangrove HE, tawny grassbird, golden-headed cisticola, white-eyed
ducks, crested and caspian terns, black-fronted dotterel.
the broad tidal flats could be a good spot for waders given the right tide and
time of year. i'll be going back.
it was also great to see so many fish jumping (and so few fishermen). a couple
almost landed in my boat!
