A short report on a trip from Adelaide to Dalhousie Springs via Lake Eyre taken
last week.
The outback is still extremely dry and almost devoid of life with the exception
of black-faced woodswallows which were almost everywhere. Only 1 Emu and 1 Red
Kangaroo were seen north of Roxby
Having said that, there were small pockets of activity.
The Borefield Road just out of Roxby saw the first Crimson and Orange Chats,
and a few white-backed swallows and Bluebonnets, all within the first 30Km.
I took a flight out over Lake Eyre which is filling nicely, though the locals
don't think it will completely fill unless there is a lot more rain in QLD.
They estimate that it will be better than 2000, but not as good as 1973.
At Margaret Creek there is a still some water, holding a few Pacific Black
Ducks and an attendant female Dingo.
Most Creek crossings had woodswallows, mostly black-faced with a few
White-breasted.
Once I got into Witjira National Park and closer to Dalhousie, Cinnamon
Quail-thrush were seen regularly though only female types were seen (would the
males be in moult and out of colour??) there were also a few white-backed
Swallows here and the only Budgies seen on the trip
Around the painted desert SW of Oodnadatta there was a group of 9 Wedge-tailed
eagles thermalling together, and around 100km south of Coober Pedy a mixed
flock of Orange chats, Red-capped robins and Zebra Finches feeding by the
roadside.
cheers
