Hi all,
I visited Lake McLarty today to have a last look at the waders before the lake
dries up and they all head north (judging by the depth of the lake, it won't
last much beyond next weekend). A number of waders were moulting into breeding
plumage (Sharpies, Curlew Sands, Greenshank and Red-necked Stint) and a couple
of Red-necked Stints and one Curlew Sandpiper appeared to be in full breeding
plumage. The main highlight was a Double-banded Plover, associating with
Red-capped Plovers in the NE corner of the lake. Robin Ashford also arrived and
I met up with him not long after finding the plover and we were both able to
get a decent look at it. He also mentioned that a Double-banded Plover was
reported from McLarty at the BAWA meeting yesterday, so I assume it's the same
bird. A few other interesting waders were about and it'd well worth the trip
for those that can spare the time this week (it'll probably dry soon after that
though).
Sightings of interest included (higher counts are relatively rough
approximates);
Black-tailed Godwit (3)
Marsh Sandpiper (3)
Red Knot (2+)
Grey-tailed Tattler (1)
Red-necked Stint (~2500)
Long-toed Stint (3)
Double-banded Plover (1)
Banded Stilt (100+)
Regent Parrot (30+)
White-fronted Chat (40+)
Cheers,
John Graff
