Excellent suggestion, thank you Charla - not at all frivolous!
Perhaps slightly more frivolous would be "Franny B. Kranny, there's a bird in
your hair!" which is essentially about a girl with red frizzy hair who ends up
with a bird in it. My son loved this book, and though not exactly instructive
about nature, it's a lot of fun.
Any more suggestions from other people always welcome!
