Dear Birding-Ausers,

A belated trip report from our recent 1 March pelagic on the
Pauletta out of Eaglehawk Neck.

Pauletta skippered by John Males with mate Gary.
Participants included David Shoch, Terry Reis, Elizabeth Shaw, Al Crawford, and
Keith and Marlis Sneden.

We managed to get out for a full day, in advance of the
rough weather that followed the rest of the week. Weather conditions were
partly cloudy with manageable 3-5 ft swells, water temperature was from 17.2 to
17.9 deg C.

Headed out past Hippolyte to the shelf in the morning. Our
furthest point offshore later in the day was around 20 nm, in 600 fathoms of
water.

Species and (very) rough counts follow. * = not counted.

Inshore:

Blue Penguin - 3

Australasian Gannet - *

Black-faced Cormorant - *

Pacific, Kelp, and Silver Gulls - *

Crested Tern - *

Offshore:

Wandering Albatross - 1 adult

Northern Royal Albatross - 1 fresh-plumaged juvenile

Shy Albatross – 100’s

Black-browed Albatross - ~10 (mostly juv/imm)

Buller’s Albatross – 50+ (all adults)

Northern Giant Petrel – 2

Unidentified giant petrel – 4-6 (all dark juveniles with
ambiguous bill color)

White-chinned Petrel – 40-50

Short-tailed Shearwater – 1000+

Fluttering Shearwater – 1

Fairy Prion – 5-10

White-faced Storm-petrel – 10-15

Grey-backed Storm-petrel – 5-10

Common Diving-petrel – 1

No Pterodromas seen despite diligent searching (though
Philip Maher’s group the previous day had at least 1 Gould’s).

I’ve posted some photos from the trip at the link below (can
be copied and pasted into a browser).
