Katherine,

Auger mining is certainly open-pit mining. Australian Auger Mining P/L says so on their web page, "Auger Mining is a highwall mining system that is applied in open-pit mines where mining coal is uneconomical due to the high strip ratio arising from increasing mining depths or difficult geologically conditions". The full text can be seen at http://auger.com.au/augermining.htm . Augering is a cheap and dirty method, with all the subsidence problems of long wall but more so. It is surprising that it is being used, as it is generally used in conjunction with open-cut, often towards the end of the economic life of the pit. The Augers can only reach up to 200 m, so centennial will certainly have to put in a few access pits to get economical quantities of coal.

Not what I would want in my back yard, though come to think about it, it is nearly in my back yard. I had better get writing.

Hi all,

This mainly for those living in the west side of Lake Macquarie. Some
wonderful bushland is at risk. I had the privilege to walk in the area
yesterday.
All help is appreciated.

*AN URGENT MESSAGE*

AN OPEN-CUT MINE WILL SOON BE OPERATING NEAR THE SUBURBS OF BLACKALLS PARK,
FASSIFERN, AWABA AND TORONTO,

UNLESS WE ALL ACT NOW!!

UNITE TO STOP THIS MINING NOW!!!!

Centennial Coal proposes to develop its 'Olstan' mine in bushland near
BLACKALLS PARK, FASSIFERN, AWABA AND TORONTO.

Due to the ban on OPEN-CUT MINING in the Lake Macquarie area, Centennial wants us to think that Olstan would be operating as an UNDERGROUND mine. NOT TRUE. Large Access Pits would be dug up to2.5km long to expose coal seams to
be auger mined from the surface.

Residents would be adversely affected by DUST, NOISE and FALLING PROPERTY
VALUES.

Environmental damage would degrade the bushland, Palmers Creek, Stony Creek.

ACT NOW TO STOP THIS MINING

*ATTEND: Centennials Coal's Open Day at Blackalls Park Public School on
SATURDAY 14 MARCH from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm*
