Hello,
I've been having a great time on my trip to Australia, but the
identification of some birds is defeating me. On 28 February I
saw a bird from the platform of the North Wollongong train
station as I was waiting to go back to Sydney after the pelagic
trip. It seemed to be all dark - kind of bluish/purplish-black
with big pale eye-rings. I thought it ought to be easy to find
in the field guide when I got a chance to look, but even after
looking multiple times, I have absolutely no idea what it is.
I've uploaded a picture of it -

If anyone could make any suggestions about its identification,
I'd appreciate it.
Also, I was looking at shorebirds at the north end of the
Esplanade in Cairns this afternoon and saw a nice selection of
birds that I'm not sure I've identified correctly. Rain does not
make identifying shorebirds any easier. Are the birds pictured
here

Bar-tailed Godwits? I followed them around for a while, but they
just walked around and never flew to show me their tails. On a
more positive note, the Laughing Gull was still there yesterday.
I got a good look at it despite the rain. I think I spotted it
again today, but it was a long way away and I was headed the
other direction. I didn't really come to Australia to look at a
Laughing Gull after all. :)
