[Birding-Aus] What is the Port Jackson Thrush?> > Dear Birders.> > BASNA , of
which I am chair, has received a request for assistance in providing current
common and scientific names for a variety of birds mentioned and illustrated in
the journal of John White, the first Surgeon-General of the colony of NSW. Many
of these are quite straightforward however I am having a "senior moment" with
one species named as the Port Jackson Thrush and described thus :-> "The Port
Jackson thrush, of which a plate is annexed, inhabits the neighbourhood of Port
Jackson. The top of the head in this species is blueish-grey; from thence down
the hind part of the neck and the back the colour is a fine chocolate brown;
the wings and tail are lead colour, the edges of the feathers pale; the tail
itself pretty long, and even at the end; all the under parts from chin to vent
are dusky-white, except the middle of the neck, just above the breast, which
inclines to chocolate. The bill is of a dull yellow; legs brown. "> > The
illustration of this bird may be seen at
http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks03/0301531h/white-09.jpg> > I am sure it is
onvious but any suggestions would be very welcome!> > The journal is most
interesting introducing the reader to such enticing species as the Great Brown
King's Fisher (Laughing Kookaburra); Anomalous Hornbill (White-winged Chough)
and Crested Goatsucker (Owlet Nightjar).> > Regards> Peter Marsh>
