We are now into our third day of 40+ degree days here in Wilby (Nothern
Victoria) and the birds are certainly starting to suffer from the heat.
Around the small pool of water I am leaving near the water tank Magpies,
Crested Pigeons, White-plumed Honeyeaters, Willie Wagtails and Magpies are
regularly coming by and making use of the water.
Brown Songlarks have been common this spring and summer in the paddocks around
the house, but I had never seen on in the actual garden until today when I
flushed a female out of the woodshed sheltering from the heat.
Much more surprising was a bird I spotted under a small Kangaroo Apple, about 5
metres from the back door. After getting a good view of it I was excited to see
it was a Little Button-quail, a new tick for me. I think the bird was a male.
It was about as big as a sparrow, though much plumper. It walked off towards
the bottlebrush at the back of the garden. Hopefully it might stay around for a
few days.
