Tom,
Uncertain about SE Queensland, and whether they are common in aviaries, but
they are certainly kept in captivity in Australia (in fact I think I may hae
seen a pair in the pet shop here in Mildura once).

Yesterday afternoon I accompanied Roger McNeill and Gavin Goodyear to the>
Metroplex site and had good looks at a couple of Australian Little Bittern> and
heard Lewin's Rail calling, but we also had an interesting observation> of a
New Zealand Red-fronted Parakeet (...or Kakariki). We were initially> surprised
to see the bird floundering in the water while Dusky Moorhens> appeared to try
and drown it, fortunately the parrot managed to fly to> safety in a nearby
tree, does anyone know if they are a popular cage-bird in> SE Queensland?> >
