Hello birders,
I had a phone call today from a lady named Christina Bardsley to say
that she had had two birds in her back yard which she positively
identified as Chestnut-quilled Rock-Pigeons. She lives at Mt. Colah,
a northern suburb of Sydney.
Clearly these must have been aviary escapees. Apart from the fact
that they are thousands of kilometres outside their normal range, the
birds allowed a fairly close approach, as if used to humans.
I don't think of the Rock-Pigeon as a species which is frequently
kept in captivity. Possibly Ms Bardsley's birds might have
originated from Taronga Zoo or Featherdale Wildlife Park, neither of
which are close to Mt. Colah. If not, can anyone comment on whether
they may have "flown the coop" from a private collection?
Colin Scouler.
