Your friend might also want to consider that possums and insects eat leaves
... so the birds she sees might not be the only people snacking on her tree.

Rainbow Lorikeets always nibbled the leaves of my apricot tree, mainly
in Spring, but also in Autumn. They never ate enough to harm the tree.
