Hi all,
Unfortunately while driving home last night I came upon a small object suddenly
ahead of me on the road. I drove over it hoping it would not move. When I went
back I found I had killed a Quail on the road. At home I checked my field
guide and it appears to be a female or possibly immature Stubble Quail. I say
possibly immature because it has dark eyes and some downy feathers on the
thighs. The adults seem to have red eyes. It had a pale buff throat with some
very small dark flecks and not the rufous throat the adult males have. The
markings on face and head also fit. I have photos if anyone would like to see
it.
Can someone please tell me if there are many known sightings of these birds in
the Kangaroo Valley area as it is the first one I have encountered. The area
where found (Kangaroo Valley Road near the corner of Glenmurray Road) is
surrounded by large paddocks and dairy farms with creeks not too far away. If
someone would like the body it is in very good condition. Not sure if the
museum would be interested. Otherwise my WIRES Diamond Python in care will be
able to put the body to good use!
Regards,
Carla Jackett
