Further to Mike's useful comments and observations on Brown Rats.
Menkhorst and Knight (2004) provide some interesting details as well:
Page 204 - Brown Rat
Distribution, habitat and status
-> Introduced ... wet grassland along streams, usually close to fresh or
salt water.
Behaviour
-> Mostly nocturnal, terrestrial, gregarious. Nests in extensive burrow
systems or cavities at ground level, does not climb readily. Capable
swimmer. truly omnivorous.
I can recommend this book as a useful addition to any naturalists library.
cheers, Martin
