Hi birders
Spent the morning walking the Forest Path (S. Lady Carrington Drive/Bola Creek)
at the Royal National Park this morning.
Highlights were 4 Bassian Thrush (probably 3 individual birds), several
beautifully showing Rufous Fantails, around 8 Black-faced Monarchs, and a
single youngish looking male Rose Robin on LCD itself. Also watched at least 3
whipbirds (1 M/F and a juvenile) chasing eachother around the undergrowth,
making noises like a growling dog... I have never seen that before. Several
juvenile Eastern Yellow Robins about as well. My target was to get some shots
of BF-Monarchs, which I didn't, but I got some pretty reasonable photos and
exceptionally extended views of Bassian Thrush to compensate.
Mount Bass was very, very quiet. The usual honeyeaters, and some thornbill were
all I could locate. The wind was picking up at this point, so I called it a day
for the Royal.
Shell Point at Taren Point had a very wary, vocal Whimbrel, a couple of GT
Tattlers and some Bar-tailed Godwit. I hadn't packed my scope, not expecting to
go there, but there were some other unidentified shorebirds among the
oysterbeds. It started to rain shortly after that anyway, so I headed home.
Cheers
Troy
