Had a most productive visit to the Lockyer Valley (SEQ) today and saw the
Freckled Duck on the Island roughly in the spot where Bill Jolly mentioned a
day or so ago. Some red showing at base of bill indicating a male. As we
walked towards the bridge at the end of the causeway I noticed a crake/rail
part way along the causeway under a red flowering callistemon (just past a
dead tree). It actually climbed about half a metre up the trunk of the tree
and enabled us to get good scope views confirming Spotless Crake. As we
walked along the causeway we looked again and it was still there under the
tree only about three metres away. A drive out to Lockyer Waters gave us
heaps of Banded Lapwings in Haslingdon Rd and a little further on in Blind
Gully Rd we has three Ground Cuckoo Shrikes sitting on a wire.
Back to Brisbane and Mt Coot-tha we found a Powerful Owl just before dark
along the creek near the viewing platform and were treated to a slow fly-by
and back by a couple of White-throated Nightjars.
Very pleasant day out.
