September is an interesting time to look at the wader roosts in SEQ
for two reasons. One is that some of the migrants birds arrive with
remnant colour. The other is that passage migrants call in on their
way south.
I don't normally see Red Knots during the height of summer, but I saw quite a few Red Knots at the Manly Wader Roost yesterday, including some with rufous on their underparts. The red-banded Bar-tailed Godwit that I mentioned yesterday has been identified as a relatively young female - banded in Tasman Bay [New Zealand] in November 2005. It also spent the 06/07 and 07/08 summers in that area. It will be interesting to see if this bird decides to hang around Moreton Bay for the summer or pushes on to NZ. Regards, Laurie. =============================== www.birding-aus.org birding-aus.blogspot.comTo unsubscribe from this mailing list, send the message: unsubscribe (in the body of the message, with no Subject line) to: =============================== |
