Hi All

Spring is in the air on Kangaroo Island, SA. Beautiful sunny days and lots
of wonderful birdwatching. I went to Cape Rouge Spit yesterday and saw some
lovely waders. Numbers have been bolstered quite considerably over past week
with NH breeders returning, some such as Grey Plover, Red Knot and
Red-necked Stint in pronounced breeding plumage. Amongst the Grey Plovers
(25), Red-necked Stints (500), Great Knots (25), Red Knots (and Ruddy
Turnstones (12) were two Whimbrels which were a highlight. A little Egret
roosting on the spit with them was a rarity for KI. On my way home called
into Cape D'Estaing near Emu Bay to check for Hooded Plover breeding on the
beach there and was thrilled to see and photograph an adult Pallid Cuckoo
which was a first timer for me on KI after 30 years birdwatching here. It
was the 6th recorded sighting for KI-the last was in 1986! It was perched in
a dead mallee and frequently dropped down into rank green pasture to procure
hairy procession caterpillars. It did not call. Got some nice pics of it as
well. Fan-tailed, Horsfield's Bronze and Golden Bronze Cuckoos are regulars
and as per usual are heard calling most days. Have six species nesting in my
house yard garden and buildings: Brown Thornbill (reeds in fish pond),
White-browed Scrubwren (Ficus at front door), Superb Fairy-wren
(Bouganvillea), Grey Shrike-thrush (hanging pot on verandah), Welcome
Swallow (tool shed) and Striated Pardalote (holes in stone wall of house and
shed).

Well, that's it for me. Happy Birding All.

Cheers

Chris Baxter
