Hi Joe,

One place you could start would be to contact `Byron at Byron bay beach
resort.' http://www.thebyronatbyron.com.au

It is an eco resort with birding as a focus point for the resort. They
publish comprehensive bird lists & information, as well as seem to be
reviving several different bird habitats, so I expect there are some
knowledgable birders at least associated with the place.

We were in Byron bay at the beginning of August. We meant to visit the eco
resort and surrounding area, but we ran out of time when we were there.

You are in for treat ! The most rich area for birdlife that we visited was
around `the pass' & the headland area, which is a combination of beach,
protected rainforest and heath.

There is a large family of around 5 whistling kites, a couple of brahminy
Kites, and a huge white bellied sea-eagle regularly flying about the
headland.

Some of the most common birds we saw each day, apart from raptors and
sea-birds such as gulls and gannets, were Little wattlebirds, scarlett
honeyeaters, brown honey-eaters,new holland honey-eaters, eastern
whip-birds, brown thornbills, variegated fairy wrens, white-browed scrub
wrens, varied trillers, spangled drongos, yellow robins, lewin honey-eaters,
scrub turkeys, and rainbow-bee-eaters. There were the usual Corvids around,
as well as noisy minors. With more time I think you could see a lot more
than that.

I hope that helps a little!

Cheers,
belinda
