Hi everyone,

I spent a morning out at Kooragang Island (Ash Island) in Newcastle, NSW
last weekend, and had an interesting encounter with a Swamp Harrier. I was
driving along a road, and the harrier was flying up above and in front of
the car, in the same direction, along the line of the road. This continued
for about twenty seconds or so, then it suddenly dropped steeply to the
roadside where it lay still, wings splayed out, as if playing dead. I slowed
the car, and then a few seconds later it was off again.

I've just taken up birding this year, and have only seen Swamp Harriers a
couple of times before, but the behaviour struck me as strange so thought
I'd ask around to see if anyone else had seen this kind of thing?

Cheers,

Rory
