A Short-tailed Shearwater found dead on a north coast NSW beach last year had a stomach full of small plastic pieces. Another shearwater found dead at Sandon Beach, north coast NSW also had plastic in its stomach, but not as much as the first bird.

Young Flesh-footed Shearwaters found dead on beaches on Lord Howe Island were found to have substantial amounts of plastic in their digestive systems, enough to cause starvation.

The continent-sized floating mass of plastic rubbish in the Pacific Ocean may be responsible for these deaths.
