Dear All,

Trawler by-catch of pelagic birds is a widespread problem , and there is a lot of research going on around the world . If you Google "seabird mortality trawler', you will come up with a lot of hits. In the South African case the problem seems to be greatly exacerbated by dumping waste while the nets are being run out or hauled in and so in effect chumming into a very effective bird trap. The by catch would be greatly reduced by not dumping when the nets are out.

The use of scarers such as Tori lines and Carey devices has greatly reduced the mortality in some fisheries where they are used. In the Falkland Island fisheries they have reduced mortality rates by some 90% by using Tori lines. For a good description of the Falkands solution. have a look at http://www.falklandsconservation.com/tori_lines_review.pdf

Cheers,

Carl Clifford
