I visited a friend at Dingley last Thursday and saw what I am pretty sure
were Brown Thornbills (and Silvereyes) in the bushes outside his kitchen
window. I wasn't able to get a really good look at them but their
behaviour was quite different to the Striated Thornbills that regularly
visit our garden.
Dingley is a bit further out than McKinnon but no less built up.
BOCA is compiling sightings of Brown Thornbills within 60km of Melbourne so
they may be able to confirm whether Brown Thornbills are back in McKinnon.

Melbourne's inner SE
I visited my parents in McKinnon (15km SE of Melbourne) yesterday, and
was surprised to hear Brown Thornbills in the trees next door. I
couldn't see them properly, as I didn't have binoculars, but I don't
know what else could sound like that.
I lived there 20 years ago but, although I've only been birding for the
last couple, I don't recall hearing that call there before. Is this a
species that has moved back into these suburbs? The nearest parkland to
their house would be a kilometre or so away, so I guess that indicates
that they are garden residents.
