Greetings all,
On Sunday 20 July, I undertook an afternoon outing to Bluewater State
Forest with a friend Farley Brewer. The forest is accessed off of Forestry
road, about 20kms out of Townsville just across from the turnoff to
Toolakea (to the right the road is called John Brewer Drive).
We followed forestry road to the top (it is tar till halfway up before
turning to gravel) where there is a gate blocking the road and a parking
lot on the left near a shed. We started walking from there. I was
surprised to find in an active bird party a pair of very active and vocal
Yellow-breasted Boatbills. The GPS co-ords for their locality are: 19
degrees 13.410? S and 146 degrees 25.046 E. Also in the vicinity was
Bower?s Shrike Thrush. About halfway between the Boatbill site and the
gate that blocks the carpark we had a pair of Barred Cuckooshrikes.
Prior to these sightings, I had only seen the Boatbill on Lake Eacham on
the Atherton tablelands and the Barred Cuckooshrike in the Mission Beach
area.
Yours in birding,
Duan
