Hi All On Kangaroo Island in SA, Fantailed cuckoos do not call throughout the year. They are quite strictly July to about January and quiet thereafter. I generally regard their calls in July as a first indicator of the approaching late winter-spring-summer breeding season. Cheers Chris Baxter -----Original Message----- From: On Behalf Of Philip Veerman Sent: Sunday, July 20, 2008 3:35 PM To: L&L Knight Cc: Birding-aus (E-mail) Subject: Fan-tailed Cuckoo Calling Not really "a sure sign that the breeding season has started" (although that depends on how you define "season" and "started"). I heard them in two places about 50 km apart in two days in late May on the NSW south coast. They will call through the year. Philip |
