Should the practice of chumming our seabirds be banned in all of NZ
waters.......unless permits are taken out for research?
Chumming is already illegal in the Subantartic Islands under Doc.......see
their minimum impact code under CHUMMING: Quote: The practice of chumming,
attracting seabirds by feeding them, is illegal in the Auckland Islands
Marine Reserve. It is discouraged elsewhere because of created change in the
natural habits of the the birds and the possiblity this increases the risk
of seabird by-catch in fisheries. Chumming also provides a potential vector
for the spread of disease.......... end Quote.
Personally I have no interest in seeing a seabird if it means putting that
bird at risk un-necessarily.............
Just as a note..........Some good research has been under-taken in trying to
reduce seabird by-catch in the longline fishery.......... one lot of
research is detailed in the paper by Johanna P. Pierne and Wendy S. Norden:
Reducing seabird by-catch in longline fisheries using a natural olfactory
deterrent...............in the form of school shark liver oil........
