We have loads of bower birds at our place, on the south coast of NSW, and
they enjoy pulling the flowers off our tomato plants so we don't get nearly
as much fruit as we should. When we do get tomatoes they eat those too, so
we have to pick them green and let them ripen indoors in order to get any
for ourselves. Small price to pay to have them around though; we have a
bower in the front yard and I love watching the male organising his
treasures, (often including my blue clothes pegs which he steals from my peg
basket!)
Just another word on mimicry; I just got back from a trip to the UK, and
while out walking one day, we met a blackbird that imitated a tune my friend
was whistling. We spent a fun half hour whistling different tunes and having
the bird repeat them to us. As we left, we heard the blackbird whistling the
first few bars of "Oh, I do love to be beside the seaside" to some startled
people walking behind us!
Cheers,
Tracey Newcombe, Tomerong NSW

Not true!
I have fruit trees, and other edible crops. It's living in Sydney
that's the problem.
