Subject: Govt may prohibit supercat breed: Wong
>From the ABC news website...It's pleasing to see the govt being
somewhat
proactive.
The Federal Government is investigating whether to ban the savannah cat,
which is a hybrid of the African serval.
The Greens have raised concerns that the savannah cat could be a threat
to
Australia's native wildlife.
Senator Penny Wong said none of the cats had been imported into
Australia,
despite several breeders promoting the pet.
"The Government does recognise that it is essential that Australia's
environment be protected from new, potentially invasive predators," she
said.
"I'm advised that the Minister for the Environment has initiated a
process
for possible amendment of the live import list to prohibit savannah
cats."
