Hi Nigel
It is quite common for the birds to return to a safe wetland roost after
a day foraging out amongst the cattle and the dairy herds in the
Illawarra attract large numbers over the winter and they return north to
breed. As the breeding sites have been moving south to about Newcastle
over the years they may find a suitable wetland down here in time.
Cheers Chris

For the past month or so, approximately 60 or 70 cattle
egret have been roosting every night in a tree in Albion
Park, NSW, next to a small wetland at the corner of Mortlock
Drive and Ashburton Drive. During the day they disperse to
their favourite feeding areas.
I understand that cattle egret gather in large colonies
during breeding season, but is this 'normal' behaviour for
flocks of this size outside of those times?
It is the first time I have seen this type of gathering
before.
Cheers
