Hi,

It would be great if there was an Australian Wildlife Atlas, BA
has the only Aus. wide bird atlas but their first atlas stopped in
it's tracks leading to the proliferation of keen birders wanting
to have their data stored and used in a variety of formatted data
bases. We live in Australia and the wildlife does not know of
these artificial state boundaries.
Other govt. institutions have their own jealously guarded atlases
and not all of them well edited, which makes some EIS reports look
a bit silly with species reported that would only have been within
a 100 miles when Cook landed.
Cheers Chris

David, in response to your suggestion about amateurs assisting in
bird conservation ...here's my response to get the ball rolling.
The following is a Victorian perspective on this issue.
The single biggest and most straightforward action birdos can
undertake is to always formally atlas their sightings. For
anywhere in Australia you can do this via the Birds Australia
Atlas (BirdData). In Victoria it is via the Atlas of Victorian
Wildlife.
The Atlas of Victorian Wildlife (AVW) fauna database
The AVW plays an important role in the management of threatened
species and ecological communities in Victoria. It is fully
supported by the relevant state agency and all data is expertly
reviewed and checked before loading into the main data set.
